MEDIA ACCREDITATION OPEN FOR THE TABLE TENNIS LIEBHERR MEN'S WORLD CUP AT THE ECHO ARENA, SEPTEMBER 28TH-30TH - Deadline 7th September 2012
Media accreditation is now open from the English Table Tennis Association for the 2012 Liebherr Men’s World Cup, which is being held in Liverpool.
The tournament which arrives on Merseyside this September 28-30th, brings with it many of the world’s best players – including the 2011 World Champion and Men’s World Cup winner Zhang Jike.
The Echo Arena will play host to the first major table tennis event after the Olympics and it may include the new Olympic Champion alongside players made up from the latest World Champions as well as Continental Champions, a home nation wildcard and the highest ranked international stars to make up the elite group of 19.
The competition, a solely singles tournament for men, is one of the highest profile events on the International Table Tennis Federation’s calendar and, for the first time ever, will be hosted in England.
The last time a major international tournament was held in the North-West was 15 years ago when Jan-Ove Waldner won the World Championship in Manchester. Who knows when the next event of this nature will hit our shores?
The event has a massive expected prize fund of £150,000 and will conclude an exciting 12 months for English table tennis, which included the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals, Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The 2011 Men’s World Cup in Paris saw France’s wildcard Adrien Mattenet shock both Vladimir Samsonov (BLR) 4-3 and Chuan Chih-Yuan (TPE) 4-2 in his group to reach the quarter-finals. A feat the English wildcard will hope to emulate this September in Liverpool.
